Sisu is an evening length work that is serving as Joy Douglas’ capstone for her B.F.A degree in dance (an early work in progress served as her capstone for the Levermore Global Scholars program). Douglas has been working on this project since the early Spring of 2017.
The original impetus of this piece was inspired by Ohad Naharin’s Decadance (2000). Ohad Naharin pulled excerpts from previous pieces, to create a full cohesive show. Sisu is a retrograded version of this concept, each section is part of a dance that will be expanded upon in the future. All the sections have their own titles, and those titles represent the full work that they will become.
Although Joy Douglas had the vision and choreography the vast majority of this work is created for the cast and is solely possible because of them. There are twenty-five sections that are currently being worked on, it is primarily an evening length piece featuring duets and solos with occasional group sections. There are eight original cast members and the final version will be comprised of twelve artists.
